Introducing Visual Measuring Spoons
It's official! The Kickstarter campaign for Visual Measuring Spoons was a success. Over 500 backers helped support the launch of my next product for Welcome Industries, a complement to the award-winning Visual Measuring Cups.
Building on the Success of our Visual Measuring Cups
Visual Measuring Spoons are intended to feel as smart & fun as our visual measuring cups, which were called " A Leap Forward" by The New York Times, "Brilliant” by Core77 and “Genius” by Yanko Design. And a Global Innovation Award finalist at the 2019 Housewares Show too!
Arriving at this Design
The prototyping process took about a year and a half and went through many iterations. At last, I landed on a design that felt "right." One of the main challenges was deciding how to distinguish the Tablespoon from the teaspoon. I experimented with a range of shapes to represent the difference— exploring ovals and squares and triangular shapes (since a Tablespoon is 3x the volume of a teaspoon), and finally settled on the rotated square to represent the Tablespoon.
Another design breakthrough came when I was out to breakfast with Brandon Williams, my fellow Founding Parter at Welcome Industries who was in town again for a day after moving out of state. He suggested making the quarter teaspoon the width of the handle. Here's his back-of-the-receipt sketch while talking through the project.
